Roaring Twenties... Redux

Roaring Twenties... Redux

We’ve been hearing it for most of the last year - The Roaring Twenties are back! - And those voices have only gotten louder as the end of the Pandemic seems to be in sight. I have been one of those voices, since at least mid-2019. The Twenties are my jam. Literally. My 21st birthday was even done up in a Great Gatsby theme (about 8 months before the Great Gatsby film by Baz Luhrman was released in theaters). And despite the annus interruptus that was the last year, they seem to be finally on us.

I’ve been calling it the Roaring Twenties Redux. I want it all. The Excess. The Exhibitionism. The Glittery Nighttime fashion. No more of this desk to dressing nonsense, due in part to the rise of the cult of WeWork, that defined the 2010s. Let’s bring back the decadent evening looks of the 1980s. Extra, sometime garish, but definitely out there and most of all - interesting. It’s a Look. I want to wear things that look positively obscene the following morning when the sun comes up. But we’ve moved past the “walk of shame,” we’ll call it a confidence strut instead, because why should you be shamed for staying out late and having fun while wearing an amazing look. This is the time to be extra. Like, wearing a ball gown out to dinner, just because you can.

For the record, I’m not actually advocating a return to twenties silhouettes and makeup, like in the photo here. That, AWESOME pic was from my aforementioned 21st birthday. It was great. I had this amazing Alberta Ferretti Dress, and this pic *might* still be my instagram profile picture. I used to say it was the best party I would ever throw. But then a global pandemic happened, and I’m like BRING IT ON, BABY. Anyway, I still want the fashion to be new, and more current. But the glitz and the glam put into evening wear was unparalleled. THAT’S what I’m advocating here.

The music in this time period was revolutionary too. It was so different compared to what any previous generations had even seen. I want that too. New, interesting, good music - although I will admit to not knowing enough about music in general to know what new innovations would look like. But that is coupled with the nightlife. And we need something better than bottle service and the club scene that has dominated the last several years. Get on it, nightlife and hospitality people.

I think, this is also going to be a time of change and opportunity, in the best way. The last year was an amazing reset for everyone. It was terrifying. But coming out on the other side, it feels like there are infinite possibilities as we go into this brave new world together.

XOXO
