Legally Blonde Turns Twenty

Legally Blonde Turns Twenty

GUYS. LEGALLY BLONDE IS TWENTY YEARS OLD TODAY. TWENTY. Jesus that makes me feel old haha. This movie is iconique and beyond excellent for so many things, (plus it totally holds up) but from the perspective of a now thirty year old watching it, her ability and confidence in herself is something that all young women (and men!) should aspire to. She refuses to let anyone change her or bat her down based on their perceptions of her. Something I didn’t understand when watching this as a ten year old, she’s actually really smart and driven. For her LSAT score to go from 143 to 179 meant she studied a lot.

There’s grace too. The (Admittedly hilarious ) scene where she shows up to the costume party as a playboy bunny. I couldn’t get over the fact that she doesn’t rat out Vivian’s pettiness to Warner. That would be such an easy thing to do. She walks around the party not being cowed asking people how they are doing when they’re looking at her sideways (and completely objectifying her), and she tells Warner, “”Oh I just decided to dress up,” I MEAN. QUEEN.

And while the whole “Don’t-estomp your little last season prada shoes at me honey,” scene is still iconic (and for 2021 purposes, I’ll note that the stereotype is terribly derivative, and false. I know straight men who do know designers, and gay men who have no clue at all.) It’s fucking brilliant, as a scene. Also, when Brooke stands up in a Dior halter top (how 2001 of you) to declare he left a Cher tape in the poolhouse once. I just died from laughing. And the COURTROOM SCENE

  • How progressive that we have a female prosecutor and black female judge?

  • There is nothing more iconic than the scene about the perm. IYKYK
